Councillors on Watford Borough Council’s development control committee voted unanimously for the scheme, which will be undertaken by the operators of Intu Watford, Intu. The centrepiece of the new Charter Place will be a 450-seat, nine screen IMAX cinema – one of only 17 outside of London. The development also promises to create an extra 10,000m2 commercial floor space and 10 new restaurants.
A new public square will also be created in order to host an exciting events programme, such as street theatre and music shows.
Construction is planned to take place throughout 2016 with a view to opening in time for Christmas 2017. According to the Mayor of Watford:
“The redevelopment will boost the local job market and create the best place in the region for people to shop for high quality brands and spend their leisure time.” The £80m pound development will include a new cinema, leisure complex and new restaurant hub.
It will create around 1,125 jobs additional new jobs and up to 500 temporary construction jobs supported during the construction phase.
The application follows a public consultation online and at Intu Watford, during which 91% of respondents felt that Charter Place both needed to change and supported Intu’s proposals for more shops and leisure facilities.
Along with the development of the Croxley Rail Link, the area appears to be benefitting from significant inward investment which should secure the long term economic security of many of its residents.
