Top Tips to Declutter Your Home

Slow and Steady Approach…

1. Schedule 20 minutes 2-3 times a week to focus on a particular area- making that commitment will strengthen your motivation to get it done and the progress you make will maintain your enthusiasm to keep going with it.

2. Use the “4 box method”- have a box (or bag) for each of the following:

  • Bin it
  • Donate it
  • Put it Away
  • Store it (ie in a loft/ storage container/ elsewhere)

3. Spend 10 of your 20 minute session clearing a particular room/ area
Put items in the correct box

  • Don’t think too much about it or procrastinate
  • Spend the remaining 10 minutes emptying the boxes
  • Items for donation should be bagged and put in the car for drop off at a charity shop etc
  • Items for the bin should be immediately disposed of
  • Store it items should be removed to an area outside the home (ie garage) for actioning at another defined time (schedule that!)
  • Put it away items- just do it

Blitz and Banish Approach….

For this approach, you will need to dedicate a good few hours. You will need your 4 boxes as above, as well as an additional “Blitz Box”…

1. Work your way around your house, gathering all of your clutter- just get it all into your Blitz Boxes and make sure all your surfaces are clear of everything you want removed
2. Next, work through your Blitz Box (or boxes) and categorise them as above..

  • Bin it
  • Donate it
  • Put it Away
  • Store it (ie in a loft/ storage container/ elsewhere)

3. Like above, deal with the 4 boxes straight away…
